SSGC's In-House IT Team Upgrades ERP, Customer Care and Billing Systems

December 31, 2013

Sui Southern Gas Company, or SSGC, is an integrated gas company in Pakistan, engaged in the business of transmission and distribution of natural gas and in the construction of high pressure transmission and low pressure distribution systems.

SSGC’s IT team upgraded the customer care and billing system and saved over $2 million. Also enhancements made to the company’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system saved about $1.8 million, said officials.

The company’s transmission system extends from Sui in Balochistan to Karachi in Sindh covering more than 3,220 Km of high pressure pipeline ranging from 12 – 24″ in diameter. The distribution activities provide gas for industrial, commercial and domestic consumers through a distribution network of over 37,000 Km. The company owns and operates a gas meter manufacturing plant as well.

To optimize its operations and enhance customer service, SSGC upgraded 15 modules of the Oracle (News - Alert) eBusiness Suite from version `11i’ to version `R12.’ Also, the database was upgraded from version `9i’ to version `10g’.

The customer care and billing (CC and B) database was upgraded from `10gR2’ to `11gR2’ in addition to enhancing the application from Oracle’s version `1.5.20’ to `2.3.1’. All the enhancements were achieved by the company’s IT management team without outside help.

According to company officials, if the project was executed by external consultants the cost may have escalated to over $3 million owing to the large scale of the project. The totally automated CC and B system ensures accurate, online and real time billing and improved customer service.

In November 2013, SSGC consolidated its position as an IT-enabled utility through continuous induction of best business practices and state-of-the-art technologies, leading to better services for its customers.

SSGC’s technology solutions also include geographical information system and business process management systems among others. To effectively record and analyze the flow and consumption of gas through SSGC’s sales meter stations (SMSs), SSGC has installed smart meters at SMSs and customer meter stations (CMSs), enabling the company to record data online. The Oracle-driven meter data management (MDM) manages vast quantity of customer consumption data gathered through smart meter deployment.
